Coping with Low Mood & Depression

If I’m feeling down a lot or wondering if I’m dealing with depression, what are the very first steps I should take to try and cope or get some help?

If you’re feeling persistently down or suspect it might be depression, reaching out is the most crucial step. You’re not alone, and it’s a very common experience. The first thing you can do is acknowledge how you’re feeling. Then, try to maintain a routine – even when you don’t feel like it. Simple things like getting up at the same time, having a shower, or a short walk can create structure. Behavioural activation, a technique from CBT, encourages engaging in activities you once enjoyed, even if you don’t feel like it now, because the doing can lift your mood. But seriously, the best step is to talk to your GP or a mental health professional. They can offer a proper diagnosis and discuss options like talking therapies (like CBT) or medication if needed.
