How can I best support and encourage my kids in their own hobbies and passions, even if they’re not mine?
My kids’ interests are wild, and often not mine!
Here’s the quick take on what I’ve found works:
- Listen, Genuinely: Even if you don’t get it, just listen to them talk about it. Ask simple questions. Showing interest is key.
- Provide Tools (Within Reason): A sketchbook, a good headset, whatever it is, a small investment shows you’re serious about their interest.
- Get Involved (On Their Terms): Don’t force yourself in. Ask them to show you, sit nearby, or try it badly. It’s about sharing their world.
- Embrace Flitting: Kids try lots of things. Let them explore. The goal isn’t the passion, but the joy of trying.
- No Pressure/Over-Scheduling: Don’t kill the joy by making it another chore or a competition. It has to be their choice.
- Praise Effort, Not Perfection: Celebrate their dedication and learning, not just the outcome.
- Be a Model: Show them your own passions. They learn by seeing us engaged.
It’s about creating an environment where they feel seen and encouraged, even if their passion seems totally bizarre to you.
