What’s the best way for me to get involved with and support my kids through school issues, like homework or friendships?
We aim for open communication, even if with my teenager it’s just grunts; I try specific questions. With my youngest, who sometimes struggles to articulate, I might just observe his mood.
For homework, it’s about supporting, not doing it for them. I guide my oldest to find answers, and for my youngest, we break tasks into small chunks with timers and breaks.
Friendship dynamics are tricky. I listen to my oldest’s troubles, validate his feelings, then prompt him to brainstorm solutions. With my youngest, we might role-play social skills at home.
Crucially, we partner with the school, especially for my youngest’s specific needs. Regular chats with his teachers and the SENCo create a united front. For my older son, it’s more about checking in occasionally.
And we always focus on effort, not just grades. We celebrate the process of learning and the resilience they show, whether it’s understanding a tough concept or dealing with a setback. It’s a continuous curve, but by staying involved and adapting, you build that trust. What kind of issues are you facing?
